The importance of love in all its forms in a human life cannot be understated. Love is one of the most passionate and intense emotions a person can experience. Whether it be for a family member, a friend, or a romantic partner, everyone has felt love at one point or another, making it one of only a few near-universal human experiences. The passion and emotion behind love are one of the reasons why the feeling inspires such intense and passionate emotions after love ends.

Like it or not, the sad reality is that nothing, not even love, is absolute. The end of a relationship can be one of the darkest moments in a person’s life. This is especially true when a marriage ends. The disappointment, anger, or regret of a promise to spend your life with someone ending prematurely can leave a person feeling like the world itself is ending.

While many people may not want to involve lawyers and courts in the worst moment of their lives, divorces, especially emotional ones, can become extremely ugly. Case in point, celebrities often have some of the most public and painful divorces of them all. Here are three of the most messy celebrity divorce cases, which does not include the Bezos divorce case.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Once the epitome of Hollywood sweethearts, movie superstars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s marriage has crumbled in recent years. The pair first met on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, in which Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie played a married couple who are both secretly assassins employed by rival agencies. The pair said they fell in love on set, while Brad Pitt was still in the middle of divorce proceedings with actress Jennifer Anniston.

The whirlwind romance the two shared was widely publicized by paparazzi, and the pair even gave birth to a child in 2006. The two were finally married after nine years of involvement by 2014, but their happiness was short-lived, with Angelina Jolie filing for divorce in 2016, on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. After three years of lengthy court battles over their shared assets and children, the pair were finally officially divorced on April 12, 2019.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp

Famous Hollywood star Johnny Depp, known for his performances in the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie series among other works, found himself in an even messier situation in his marriage to Amber Heard. The pair first met when they co-starred in The Rum Diary, and were married four years later in 2015. Again, their marriage was short-lived, as Amber Heard filed for divorce in May 2016, going so far as to seek a temporary restraining order.

She also alleged that Depp had both physically and verbally abused her during the length of their relationship, often under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Johnny Depp denied the allegations, resulting in negative consequences to both actors’ careers as well as court battles that are still unresolved to this day, though the High Court of Justice in England found that at least 12 or 14 instances of violence alleged by Heard were “substantially true” at a trial in June 2020.

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James

Sandra Bullock, the award-winning actress who starred in classics such as Speed and Miss Congeniality, had her own taste of an ugly divorce with her ex-husband Jesse James, host of the American television show Monster Garage. The pair married in 2005 and fought hard to earn custody of Bullock’s young daughter at the time. Only five years later, however, a series of allegations by several women claiming to have had affairs with Jessie James ended the marriage, with Bullock filing for divorce in 2010.
